What it is

Tanabata, the star festival, celebrates the meeting of two stars, a weaver princess and a cowherd, who are allowed to cross the Milky Way once a year. Across Japan it is held on July 7, but Sendai keeps it a month later, closer to the old lunar date.

Sendai’s version is the most famous. Local shops compete to make the most beautiful decorations, and for three days the city’s covered arcades are hung with thousands of huge, colorful streamers. Walking under them is like walking through an indoor garden of paper.
