What it is

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival traces its roots to 1733, when fireworks were set off over the river to pray for the victims of famine and disease. Through the Edo period, rival fireworks makers competed to dazzle the crowds on the riverbanks.

Today it is Tokyo’s biggest summer fireworks show, with about 20,000 shells over roughly 90 minutes. It is crowded and hot, but watching fireworks over the old downtown, surrounded by people in yukata, is a true Tokyo summer experience.
