What it is

The Tenjin Matsuri is the summer festival of Osaka Tenmangū, the city’s shrine to Tenjin, the deified scholar Sugawara no Michizane. It has been held for over a thousand years and is counted among Japan’s three great festivals.

On July 25, Tenjin is carried out of the shrine in a land procession of about 3,000 people, then boards a boat on the Ōkawa River. As night falls, a fleet of about 100 lantern-lit boats sails the river while fireworks burst overhead, offered to the kami and the people of Osaka.
