What it is

Yamaga, a hot-spring town in northern Kumamoto, is famous for Yamaga dōrō, delicate golden lanterns built entirely from Japanese paper and glue. Legend says that long ago, villagers guided a passing emperor through thick fog with torches, and later began offering lanterns at the shrine where he stayed.

The festival in mid-August brings the lanterns to life. On the night of August 16, about a thousand women in matching yukata, each with a glowing lantern on her head, dance slowly together to the folk song Yoheho-bushi. The dance was created in the 1950s and has become the town’s best-known sight.
